Visiting Yiwu Market Yourself: A Practical Guide
Planning to walk the market without an agent? Here's what first-time buyers should know before they go.
Before You Go
- Open daily 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, closed only for Chinese New Year.
- Busiest season is October–December (holiday product demand) — expect more crowds.
- Install a translation app (camera-based translation is especially useful for signage and price negotiation).
- Bring a portable charger and a lot of business cards — booths hand out thousands of them.
Getting Around Inside
- Each district can take close to an hour to walk end-to-end — plan multiple days if you need to cover several districts.
- Booths are numbered by zone/row — note down numbers as you go, it's easy to lose track of a good supplier.
- Take photos of booth numbers and business cards together so you can match them back up later.
Payment & Pricing
- Prices are usually quoted in RMB on an EXW (ex-works) basis.
- Most booths accept cash (CNY) or mobile payment; credit cards are rarely accepted.
- Discounts of around 5–10% are sometimes possible on larger orders — it doesn't hurt to ask.
Things to Watch For
- The market is guarded and monitored, but keep an eye on your belongings in crowded aisles.
- Verify sample quality matches what's actually shipped — ask for a pre-shipment inspection on larger orders.
- Minimum order quantities vary a lot by booth — confirm MOQ before falling in love with a product.
💡 Many first-time buyers hire a local guide for their first visit — guides are often free, with their company earning a small commission (typically 2–5%) from your purchases instead.
